The numbers behind the choice
Software Buying Statistics 2026
This page covers how organizations buy business software: how much they spend and how pricing is changing, how buyers research and shortlist vendors, who signs off, how often purchases disappoint, and where money is wasted after a contract is signed. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026. Sources include analyst forecasts (Gartner), buyer surveys (G2, TrustRadius, Forrester, Capterra, EY), spend data from SaaS management vendors (Zylo, Flexera) and official EU statistics (Eurostat). Each figure states its geography and who was surveyed.

The short answer
Software budgets keep growing: Gartner forecasts worldwide software spending of $1,468 billion in 2026, up 15.5%. AI now shapes how that money is spent, with G2 finding 51% of B2B software buyers start research in an AI chatbot more often than Google and TrustRadius finding 94% of AI users fact-check the answers. Waste is the main risk after purchase: Zylo finds 36% of SaaS licenses go unused, and Flexera finds 59% of organizations saw wasted AI spend rise.

Our reading of the data
Spending is rising faster than most other IT categories. Gartner forecasts worldwide software spending of $1,468 billion in 2026, up 15.5%, within total IT spending of $6.37 trillion. Zylo puts median SaaS spend at $9,455 per employee. Pricing models are under pressure: G2 found preference for outcome-based pricing rose from 11% to 23% in a year, and 82% of senior US leaders in EY's AI Pulse Survey expect per-seat SaaS pricing to become less relevant.
Research has moved into AI chatbots, but buyers check the answers. G2 found 51% of B2B software buyers start research in a chatbot more often than in Google, and 69% picked a different vendor than planned because a chatbot recommended it. TrustRadius found 63% of technology buyers used AI during a purchase, 94% of those fact-checked it, and 74% used reviews. Gartner found 67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free experience, up from 61% a year earlier.
Decisions are getting harder to close. Forrester counts 13 internal stakeholders in a typical buying decision, G2 found 49% of buyers had seen a CFO veto an approved purchase, and IT security review is the most common delay after selection. TrustRadius found 83% of buyers shortlist three products or fewer, so getting onto the shortlist matters more than winning later. EY found 76% of senior leaders at AI-investing US organizations say off-the-shelf software no longer fits their needs.
Waste is the cost buyers control least. Zylo found organizations leave 36% of SaaS licenses unused and 78% of IT leaders were hit by unexpected consumption or AI charges. Flexera found wasted cloud spend rose to 29% for the first time in five years, only 31% of organizations have accurate visibility into AI software, and 48% were audited by a vendor in the past year. Capterra's Australian survey adds that only 30% of companies are successful software adopters.

Questions readers ask
- How much do companies spend on software?
- Gartner forecasts worldwide software spending of $1,468 billion in 2026, up 15.5% from 2025. At the company level, Zylo's 2026 SaaS Management Index puts median SaaS spend at $9,455 per employee.
- How do B2B buyers research software now?
- Increasingly through AI chatbots. G2 found 51% of B2B software buyers start research in a chatbot more often than in Google in 2026, and TrustRadius found 63% of technology buyers used AI during a purchase, though 94% of them fact-checked its answers.
- Do buyers still want to talk to sales reps?
- Fewer do. Gartner found 67% of B2B buyers preferred a rep-free buying experience in its 2025 survey, up from 61% a year earlier. Forrester found more than 60% of business buyers use a trial to evaluate solutions.
- How many vendors do buyers compare?
- Not many. TrustRadius found 83% of technology buyers shortlisted three or fewer products in its January 2026 survey. G2 found 69% of buyers chose a different vendor than first planned because an AI chatbot recommended it, so the shortlist is often set before sales contact.
- How much software spend is wasted?
- Zylo found organizations leave an average of 36% of SaaS licenses unused against recommended utilization levels. Flexera's 2026 surveys found wasted cloud spend rose to 29% and 59% of respondents saw wasted AI spend increase.
- Who approves software purchases?
- Usually a group. Forrester counts 13 internal stakeholders in a typical buying decision, and G2 found 49% of buyers had seen a CFO veto an already-approved software purchase in the past year. Zylo found business units control 81% of SaaS spend.
How these figures were chosen
We chose figures that describe how organizations budget for, research, select and manage business software, and we read each one on the publisher's page or official press release. Many sources are vendors with a commercial interest in the topic: G2, TrustRadius and Capterra run software review sites, Zylo and Flexera sell spend management tools, Coupa and Infor sell business software. We label these as vendor surveys, cap any single publisher at about a sixth of the page, and balance them with Gartner and Forrester research, EY and Bain survey work and Eurostat official statistics. Samples differ widely: some are global, some US only, Capterra's covers Australia and Bain and KLAS cover US healthcare. Gartner's spending figures are forecasts. We dropped monthly trackers whose pages are overwritten with each update. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
