8 Best Accounting Software of 2026
By the KeenVerdict research desk · Updated November 4, 2026

Our verdict
QuickBooks Online is still the safe default for a US business: it now has a free plan, accountants know it, and every tier adds features a growing company will use. Zoho Books gives nearly as much for less money, with a generous free plan and a $15 Standard tier. Xero suits businesses that want unlimited invoicing on a mid-priced plan. Freelancers who mostly bill clients should look at FreshBooks, and the smallest businesses can run on Wave for free.
The short answer
QuickBooks Online is our top pick for most US small businesses: a free plan, then Simple Start at $38 per month. Zoho Books is the best value alternative at $15 per organization per month billed annually, and Wave is the cheapest full option with a free Starter plan and Pro at $19 per month.
This list is for owners, freelancers and bookkeepers choosing cloud accounting software for a US small business. It covers full-featured ledgers, invoicing-first tools for freelancers and two low-cost options for very small companies. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run hands-on tests. Scores weigh features at 40 percent, ease of use at 30 and value at 30. Many vendors advertise deep first-months discounts, so we list the regular price where the page shows it.

Free plan; Simple Start $38 per month (50% off for 3 months when checked); Essentials $85; Plus $140
Quoted from the QuickBooks Online pricing page on November 4, 2026:
Simple Start For starting small $38 $19 / mo 50% off for 3 months*
QuickBooks Online remains the default for US small businesses, and the new QuickBooks Free plan makes it easier to start. Free covers basic accounting and invoicing with no card required. Simple Start, at a regular $38 per month, adds automated bookkeeping, profit and loss reports, invoicing with card and bank payments, bill pay by ACH and Intuit Intelligence AI that categorizes expenses and looks for tax deductions. It allows one user plus two accountants. Essentials, at $85, raises that to three users and adds enhanced reports and time on invoices. Plus, at $140, adds budgets, project profitability, inventory and class tracking for five users. The price is the main drawback. Discounts cut the first three months in half, then the full rate applies, and it is higher than Xero or Zoho Books at each step. You pay for familiarity: your accountant almost certainly knows it.
What works
- +New free plan covers basic accounting and invoicing
- +Accountant access included on every paid plan
- +Clear upgrade path from 1 user to 25
What does not
- −Simple Start is limited to 1 user
- −Regular prices are high after the 3-month discount

Free plan; Standard $15 per organization per month billed annually ($20 monthly); Professional $40
Quoted from the Zoho Books pricing page on November 4, 2026:
STANDARD Efficiently organize your transactions, accounts, reports, and books $ 20 $ 15 Price/Org/Month
Zoho Books offers the most accounting for the money on this list. The free plan is unusually complete: invoices, quotes, expenses and journals, receipt autoscans, mileage tracking, online payments, a customer portal, bank reconciliation, recurring invoices, W-9 management, 1099 tracking and more than 50 reports, for one user and one accountant. Standard costs $15 per organization per month on annual billing, or $20 monthly, and adds three users, progress invoicing, sales and use tax tracking, bank feeds, recurring expenses and 1099 e-filing. Professional, at $40, adds purchase and sales orders, multi-currency and inventory features. Pricing per organization rather than per user keeps costs flat as you add staff. The trade-offs are an interface that takes a little learning and fewer accountants who already know it. If your accountant is flexible, it is the smartest buy for a small company.
What works
- +Free plan includes 50+ reports, a customer portal and online payments
- +Priced per organization, not per user
- +Standard is $15 per month on annual billing
What does not
- −Free plan allows 1 user plus 1 accountant
- −Bank feeds need Standard
- −Fewer US accountants know it than QuickBooks

Early $27 per month after a 3-month discount; Growing $59; Established $97
Quoted from the Xero pricing page on November 4, 2026:
Then $27 per month An easy financial foundation - track cash flow with the essentials.
Xero is the main alternative to QuickBooks and the stronger choice for bank reconciliation and cash flow forecasting. Every plan includes reconciliation, Smart Document Capture, real-time reports, W-9 and 1099 management, sales tax, online invoice payments and free domestic ACH bill payments. Early costs $27 per month after a deep three-month discount and adds a 30-day cash flow forecast, but it caps you at 20 invoices and five bills, which many businesses will pass quickly. Growing, at $59, removes those limits and adds automated bill entry, performance dashboards, financial health scorecards and a 60-day forecast. Established, at $97, adds advanced tools and analytics. Payroll comes through Gusto. There is no free plan, and Xero's US accountant network is smaller than Intuit's. For a business that values clean reconciliation and forward-looking cash views, it is a strong pick.
What works
- +Core accounting features on every plan, including 1099s
- +Free expert setup help
- +Domestic ACH bill payments are free
What does not
- −Early caps you at 20 invoices and 5 bills

Free Starter plan; Pro $19 per month billed monthly or $190 per year
Quoted from the Wave pricing page on November 4, 2026:
It’s Pro time. $19 USD/month Billed monthly
Wave is the best free option for a very small business. The Starter plan costs nothing and allows unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping records, online payments and invoicing from the mobile app. Wave makes its money on payments: card transactions on Starter cost 2.9 percent plus $0.60. Pro, at $19 per month billed monthly or $190 a year, drops the fixed $0.60 card fee on the first 10 transactions each month, auto-imports and categorizes bank transactions, captures unlimited receipts and automates late payment reminders. For a freelancer billing a dozen clients, that is enough accounting. It is not built for growth. There are no inventory, project tracking or class features to match QuickBooks Plus or Zoho Books Professional, and without Pro you enter bank activity by hand. Start here if money is tight and switch when you hire or carry stock.
What works
- +Free plan with unlimited invoices and records
- +Very simple to learn
- +Pro costs $190 a year on annual billing
What does not
- −Bank imports need Pro
- −Card fees of 2.9% plus $0.60 on Starter

Lite $23 per month regular price (80% off for 4 months when checked); Plus $43; Premium $70
Quoted from the FreshBooks pricing page on November 4, 2026:
Was $23.00 | Save $73.60 $ 23 .00 USD/mo
FreshBooks is built around getting paid, and it does that better than the general ledgers. Lite, at a regular $23 per month, sends invoices and estimates, tracks expenses, takes card, ACH, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Buy Now, Pay Later payments and produces tax-time reports. The catch is a five-client limit. Plus, at $43, raises that to 50 clients and adds proposals, client retainers, financial and accounting reports, receipt scanning and accountant access, which is where most freelancers should start. Premium, at $70, removes the client cap. Add-ons push the cost up: $11 per extra team member, $20 for advanced payments and $40 plus $6 per person for payroll. Accountants also find it less complete than QuickBooks or Xero for full bookkeeping. For a consultant, designer or agency that lives on invoices and retainers, it is the most pleasant tool to use.
What works
- +Easiest invoicing workflow on this list
- +Wide range of client payment methods
- +30-day money-back guarantee
What does not
- −Lite bills only 5 clients
- −Team members cost $11 per user per month extra
- −Accounting reports and accountant access wait until Plus

Odoo is a business suite, and its accounting app makes the most sense as part of it. The One App Free plan lets you run a single app, such as Accounting, for unlimited users at no cost, which is generous. The paid Standard plan includes every app, including Sales, eCommerce, CRM, Inventory, HR, Project and POS, for one per-user fee with hosting, maintenance and unlimited support. The Custom plan adds Odoo Studio, multi-company, external API access and on-premise or Odoo.sh hosting. The learning curve is the cost. Odoo is closer to an ERP than to QuickBooks, and setup takes more time, often with a partner. For a business that already needs inventory and sales tools in one system, that trade is worth it. The pricing page showed euro prices from our location, so check the USD rate on Odoo's site before comparing.
What works
- +Accounting alone is free for unlimited users
- +Paid plans bundle every Odoo app for one per-user fee
- +Grows into a full business system
What does not
- −Steeper learning curve than QuickBooks or Wave
- −Most value comes when you adopt several apps
- −USD prices did not load from our location, so the price check is pending
- Free plan
- Yes, one app with unlimited users
- Paid tiers

Standard Cloud $12 per month billed monthly or $8 per month billed yearly; Premium Cloud $36
Quoted from the Akaunting pricing page on November 4, 2026:
Best for one-person businesses $12 per month
Akaunting is a low-cost ledger with an unusual option: you can run it on Akaunting's cloud or install it on your own server under separate on-premise plans. Standard Cloud costs $12 per month billed monthly, or $8 per month on yearly billing, and covers one company, one user plus one accountant, 1,000 invoices and four included apps, with unlimited customers, vendors, reports and products and multiple currencies. Premium Cloud, at $36 per month or $24 yearly, raises the limits to ten companies, ten users and 10,000 invoices, and adds double-entry, bank feeds, expense claims, roles and a client portal. That split is the weakness: bank feeds and double-entry, standard on Zoho Books' paid tier, cost Premium money here. Extra apps are sold separately. For an owner on a tight budget who bills in several currencies or wants to self-host, it is a sensible choice.
What works
- +Standard Cloud is $8 per month on yearly billing
- +Multi-currency included from the cheapest plan
- +On-premise option for full control of data
What does not
- −Standard allows 1 user plus 1 accountant and 1,000 invoices
- −Double-entry and bank feeds need Premium
- −Smaller US accountant network than the major brands
- Standard limits
- 1 company, 1 user plus 1 accountant, 1,000 invoices
- Premium limits
- 10 companies, 10 users, 10,000 invoices
- Deployment
- Cloud or on-premise

One plan at $30 per month as listed; 14-day free trial
Quoted from the Kashoo pricing page on November 4, 2026:
$ 30.00/Mo Start my free trial → Prices in USD
Kashoo keeps the decision simple: one plan, every feature, listed at $30 per month, with a 14-day trial that needs no credit card. That plan includes unlimited invoices, online payments, expense and bill tracking, sales tax, bank feeds, project and item tracking, multi-currency, unlimited attachments, a double-entry ledger and two-factor authentication. Users are unlimited at no extra charge, which sets it apart from QuickBooks' per-tier user caps. Integrations are thin, with Square and PaymentEvolution for payroll named on the pricing page, and each extra business needs its own subscription. At $30 it costs more than Zoho Books Standard or Xero Early, so the case rests on simplicity and the unlimited users. For a small team that wants everyone in the books without counting seats, and no upsell tiers, it works. Growing companies will want the broader ecosystems of QuickBooks or Xero.
What works
- +Unlimited users at no extra charge
- +Every feature in one plan
- +14-day free trial with no credit card
What does not
- −Each additional business needs its own subscription
- −Fewer integrations than QuickBooks or Xero
- −No free plan
- Users
- Unlimited, no extra charge
- Free trial
- 14 days, no credit card
- Plans
- One plan with every feature
Before you choose
Ignore the intro discount and price the second year
QuickBooks, Xero, FreshBooks and Wave all advertise discounts for the first three or four months. Xero's Early plan, for example, is $5.40 for three months and then $27. Budget on the regular price, since that is what you will pay for years.
Check the caps on cheap plans
Entry plans limit what you can do. Xero's Early plan allows 20 invoices and 5 bills, FreshBooks Lite bills up to 5 clients and QuickBooks Simple Start has 1 user. Count your monthly invoices and bills before you pick.
Ask your accountant first
Your bookkeeper or tax preparer will work faster in a system they know. QuickBooks plans include access for two or three accountants, Zoho Books includes one accountant seat even on the free plan and Kashoo lets you add users at no extra charge.
Decide where payroll and payments come from
Payroll is usually an add-on. Xero connects to Gusto, FreshBooks charges $40 per month plus $6 per person, and Wave's online payments carry card fees of 2.9 percent plus $0.60 on Starter. Add these to the subscription when you compare.
Plan for 1099s and sales tax
US businesses that pay contractors need W-9 and 1099 tracking. Xero includes W-9 and 1099 management on every plan, and Zoho Books tracks 1099 contractors on its free plan and e-files 1099s on Standard.
Questions readers ask

- QuickBooks or Xero: which should I choose?
- Choose QuickBooks if your accountant uses it or you want a free starting plan. Choose Xero if you want cash flow forecasting and 1099 management on every plan; its Early plan is $27 per month but caps you at 20 invoices, so most businesses need Growing at $59.
