Our reading of the data

The public vendors are still growing. monday.com grew revenue 22% in the second quarter of 2026 and reported net dollar retention of 109%, rising to 115% for accounts above $100,000. Asana grew 10% with overall retention of 97%. Atlassian, with more than 350,000 customers, reports that over half of its core app users sit on business teams. At both monday.com and Asana, customers in the largest spending tiers grew faster than the overall customer base.

AI now shapes buying and daily work. In Capterra's 2025 survey, 70% of Australian buyers ranked security as their top priority and 40% said they struggle to get full value from their tools. Smartsheet found 97% of project and portfolio managers experiment with AI but only 46% trust it to act without supervision, and Digital.ai found AI adoption among Agile teams rose from 68% to 84% while only 49% had governance guardrails. monday.com attributes 17% of net new ARR in Q2 2026 to AI products.

Delivery and reporting remain hard. Wellingtone's latest survey, from 2023, found only 36% of organizations always or mostly finish on time and 72% of respondents spend half a day or more each month on reports. Atlassian's 2025 survey says teams lose 25% of their time searching for answers, and 61% of Smartsheet's respondents say their tools make it hard to show their contribution to outcomes. PMI's 2025 data shows project professionals with high business acumen meet objectives more often (83% against 78%).

Demand for project skills is rising. The BLS projects 7% job growth for US project management specialists from 2025 to 2035, PMI expects the world to need up to 29.8 million more project professionals by 2035, and in APM's 2026 Skills Survey 54% of UK project professionals worried about having the right skills to deliver.

How these figures were chosen

We selected figures that bear on choosing project management software and took each from the organization that produced it: company filings for vendor metrics, the BLS for US employment and pay, and the survey owner for opinion data (PMI, APM, Gallup, Microsoft, Atlassian, Smartsheet, Digital.ai, Capterra, Wellingtone). PMI's own press pages could not be fetched for checking, so PMI figures are quoted from republished PMI announcements. Vendor metrics use each company's own definitions, so customer counts and retention rates are not directly comparable across firms. Surveys rely on self-selected respondents and differ in region and year. The Wellingtone figures date from 2023 and are labeled as the latest edition available.
