The short answer

Most small businesses now have a website: Clutch found 83% did in 2025, up from 64% in 2018, and Eurostat counts 79.01% of EU enterprises with 10 or more staff. Getting visitors is harder, since Pew Research Center found Google users clicked a result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Quality lags too, with HTTP Archive finding 48% of mobile sites pass Core Web Vitals and WebAIM finding detectable accessibility failures on 95.9% of top home pages.

Our reading of the data

A website is now the norm for small businesses, but not universal. Clutch's 2025 survey found 83% of small businesses had a website, up from 64% in 2018, and 12% had launched one in the past year. Eurostat counts 79.01% of EU enterprises with 10 or more employees with a website, from 76.66% of small firms to 95.65% of large ones. The SBA counts 36.2 million US small businesses, so even a small offline share is a large number of firms.

Getting found is the harder problem. BrightLocal found 61% of US consumers start a local business search on Google, yet only 22% of owners think most customers come from Google. Pew Research Center's browsing data shows AI summaries cut clicks: users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with a summary, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1%. Positive reviews help, with 54% of consumers in BrightLocal's 2026 survey most likely to visit a business website after reading them.

Platforms are consolidating around builders and a few commerce engines. HTTP Archive finds CMS-driven sites make up over 54% of observed websites, and Clutch finds DIY builders such as Wix and Squarespace power 41% of small business sites, while 45% of owners outsource development. US e-commerce reached $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, 17.1% of retail sales, according to the Census Bureau, but only 21.38% of small EU enterprises sold online in 2024.

Quality is the weak spot. HTTP Archive finds 48% of mobile sites pass Core Web Vitals in 2025 and only 45% of WordPress sites do. WebAIM detected an average of 56.1 accessibility errors per top home page in 2026, Seyfarth Shaw counted 8,667 ADA Title III federal lawsuits in 2025, and Patchstack found 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, 91% of them in plugins. Owners choosing a platform should weigh maintenance and plugin risk, not just design.

How common are WordPress security problems?

How these figures were chosen

We chose figures on small business websites and the conditions they operate in, and checked each against the publisher's page or report. Few official sources measure small business websites directly, so we combine official statistics (SBA Office of Advocacy, U.S. Census Bureau, Eurostat), independent research (Pew Research Center), surveys by companies that serve small businesses (Clutch, BrightLocal), and web-wide measurement projects (HTTP Archive, WebAIM, Cloudflare, Patchstack, Seyfarth Shaw's lawsuit count). Web-wide data covers all sites in each crawl, not only small business sites, and Eurostat covers firms with 10 or more employees. Clutch's release does not give its sample size. The Census Bureau link points to the dated second quarter 2026 release, not the page that is overwritten each quarter. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
