Remote Work Statistics 2026
This page collects the most recent official and survey figures on working from home: how many people do it, how many days, which jobs and countries have the most of it, what employers now require, and what the research says about productivity and retention. Most figures describe 2025 and 2026 in the United States, with comparison data for Great Britain, Canada, Australia and the European Union. Older figures are labeled as such and kept only where they set the baseline.

The short answer
About 35% of employed Americans did some or all of their work at home on days they worked in 2025, according to the BLS American Time Use Survey, and roughly 26% of all paid full workdays in the US were worked from home in mid-2026, according to WFH Research. Among Americans whose jobs can be done remotely, 54% were hybrid, 25% fully remote and 21% on-site in August 2026 (Gallup), while 28% of working adults in Great Britain were hybrid in early 2025 (ONS).

Our reading of the data
Remote work settled at a level well above its pre-pandemic baseline and has stayed there. The BLS American Time Use Survey found that 35% of employed people did at least some work at home on days they worked in 2025, and the Current Population Survey put the monthly telework rate at 22.6% in March 2026, within a range of 21.5% to 23.0% for the prior year. WFH Research, which counts full days rather than people, estimates that about 26% of paid days in mid-2026 were worked from home. The three numbers differ because they measure different things, not because they disagree.
Hybrid is the default arrangement for people who can work remotely. Gallup reports that 54% of remote-capable US employees were hybrid in August 2026, and its analysis shows hybrid workers spending about 2.3 days a week in the office. WFH Research finds that among all full-time employees, 62% were fully on site, 26% hybrid and 12% fully remote over the past year, which shows how much the answer depends on whether the base is all workers or only those with remote-capable jobs.
Access to remote work follows education, income and industry. BLS data show telework rates above 50% in financial activities and under 4% in accommodation and food services, and the ONS found that British workers with a degree were 10 times more likely to hybrid work than those with no qualifications. Country rates also vary widely: 36% of Australian workers usually worked from home in August 2025 (ABS), while 17.4% of Canadian workers mostly worked from home in May 2025 (Statistics Canada).
Employer pressure to return to the office has grown, but attendance has moved more slowly than policy. Robert Half found that fully on-site roles rose to 85% of the job postings it analyzed in Q3 2026, and the Flex Index counted 29 Fortune 100 companies with five-day office policies in mid-2025. Kastle badge data still show average office occupancy near 56% of the pre-pandemic baseline. On productivity, a randomized trial published in Nature found that two home days a week cut quit rates by one-third without hurting performance reviews, and the San Francisco Fed found little link between telework and industry productivity growth.

Questions readers ask
- What percentage of Americans work from home?
- It depends on the measure. The BLS American Time Use Survey found that 35% of employed people did some or all of their work at home on days they worked in 2025, while the BLS telework rate was 22.6% in March 2026. WFH Research estimates about 26% of paid full workdays were worked from home in mid-2026.
- Is hybrid work more common than fully remote work?
- Yes. Gallup found 54% of remote-capable US employees were hybrid in August 2026, compared with 25% fully remote. Across all full-time employees, WFH Research counts 26% hybrid and 12% fully remote.
- Does remote work hurt productivity?
- The best causal evidence says hybrid work does not. A randomized trial published in Nature found two home days a week had no effect on performance grades and cut quit rates by one-third, and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco found little link between telework and industry productivity growth.
- How many days a week do hybrid workers go to the office?
- Gallup estimates hybrid workers spend 46% of their week in the office, about 2.3 days. In Owl Labs' 2025 survey, most hybrid workers went in three days (39%) or four days (34%) a week.
- Are return-to-office mandates increasing?
- Yes, in postings and at large employers. Robert Half found fully in-office roles rose from 65% to 85% of the US job postings it analyzed between Q4 2025 and Q3 2026, and the Flex Index counted 29 Fortune 100 companies with five-day office policies in 2025. Office occupancy measured by Kastle remains near 56% of its early 2020 baseline.
- Which countries work from home the most?
- On their own national measures, 36% of Australian workers usually worked from home in August 2025 (ABS), 28% of British workers were hybrid in early 2025 (ONS), and 17.4% of Canadians mostly worked from home in May 2025 (Statistics Canada). In the EU, Stockholm had the highest regional share at 40.5% in 2021 (Eurostat).
How these figures were chosen
We used official statistics offices (BLS, Census Bureau, ONS, Statistics Canada, ABS, Eurostat), academic and Federal Reserve research, and surveys run directly by the publishing organization. Remote work numbers depend heavily on definitions: some count anyone who did any work at home, some count people who usually or mostly work at home, some count full paid days, and Gallup counts only employees whose jobs can be done remotely. Figures from different publishers should not be compared as if they measure the same thing. Kastle occupancy is a weekly snapshot of 10 metro areas and changes each week. The Eurostat figures are the latest with published written analysis and describe 2019 to 2021. Every quote was refetched from the source page on the date shown at the top. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
