HR Technology Statistics 2026
This page gathers figures that matter when choosing HR software: how far AI has spread inside HR teams, what HR buyers plan to fund, whether time savings survive real work, how employees use AI, how the main HR software vendors are growing, and what the US HR workforce earns. Most data comes from US and global surveys published in 2025 and 2026, plus 2025 official statistics from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and Eurostat. Onboarding figures live on our separate employee onboarding statistics page.

The short answer
SHRM found 39% of organizations had AI in their HR function in 2026, with recruiting the most common use at 27%, and Eurostat counted 19.95% of EU enterprises using any AI in 2025. The payoff is mixed: Gartner found 62% of employees say AI saved them time, while Workday research found nearly 40% of AI time savings are lost to rework. On the vendor side, Workday's subscription revenue rose 13.9% to $2.471 billion in its quarter to July 2026.

Our reading of the data
HR is adopting AI, but unevenly. SHRM's 2026 survey of 1,908 HR professionals found 39% had AI in their HR function and another 7% planned to launch it that year, with recruiting the most common use at 27%. Size matters: 60% of extra-large organizations had AI in HR against 33% of small ones. Eurostat shows the same pattern across all business functions in the EU, where 55.03% of large enterprises used AI in 2025 against 17% of small ones. Mercer's February 2026 survey adds that only 16% of US companies used AI for compensation work, even though more than half were exploring it.
The return is less certain than the sales pitch. Gartner found 62% of employees say AI saved them time, but only 7% of organizations tell staff how to use the time saved. Workday's research found nearly 40% of AI time savings are lost to rework and only 14% of employees consistently get clear net gains. Gallup's 2026 data is more positive: 65% of employees in organizations that had implemented AI said it improved their productivity. The practical reading for buyers is to start with narrow, checkable tasks such as screening and scheduling and to ask vendors for error rates.
Employee use is rising from a low base. Gallup reports 45% of US employees used AI at work at least a few times a year by the third quarter of 2025, but only 10% used it daily, and Pew Research Center found 38% of employed US adults used chatbots for work tasks in February 2026. Leaders use AI far more than individual contributors in Gallup's data, and ADP Research found daily AI users were more than twice as likely to be fully engaged as workers who never use AI.
The vendor side keeps growing. Workday grew subscription revenue 13.9% in its quarter to July 2026 and said AI drove more than 25% of new annual contract value, while Paycom grew total revenue 9.8% in the second quarter of 2026. Buyers also face rules: Littler found 84% of US employers expected AI-related policy changes to affect their business in 2026, double the 2025 share. The people who run these systems are well paid, with BLS median wages of $75,940 for HR specialists and $149,280 for HR managers in May 2025.

Questions readers ask
- How many companies use AI in HR?
- SHRM's 2026 survey found 39% of organizations had AI in their HR function and another 7% planned to launch it that year. Adoption is much higher at large employers: 60% of extra-large organizations against 33% of small ones. In the EU, Eurostat found 19.95% of enterprises used any AI technology in 2025.
- What is AI most often used for in HR?
- Recruiting. SHRM found 27% of HR professionals reported AI in recruiting in 2026, followed by HR technology at 21% and learning and development at 17%. Paychex found US small businesses plan HR-related AI spending on recruiting (44%) and onboarding (41%) first, while Mercer found only 16% of US companies used AI for compensation work.
- Does AI in HR actually save time?
- Partly. Gartner found 62% of employees say AI saved them time, but Workday research found nearly 40% of AI time savings are lost to rework and only 14% of employees consistently see clear net gains. Gallup found 65% of employees in organizations that implemented AI reported a positive productivity effect in 2026.
- Is AI reducing hiring?
- Not at most companies yet. In Mercer's February 2026 US survey, 10% of companies said AI had decreased hiring over the previous 12 months, while 11% said they had increased hiring for new technology roles.
- How fast is the HR software market growing?
- Workday grew subscription revenue 13.9% to $2.471 billion in its quarter ended July 31, 2026, and said AI drove more than 25% of new annual contract value. Paycom's total revenue rose 9.8% to $531.2 million in the second quarter of 2026.
- How much do HR professionals earn?
- The BLS reports a median annual wage of $75,940 for US human resources specialists and $149,280 for human resources managers in May 2025. Both occupations are projected to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035.
How these figures were chosen
We selected figures that help a buyer judge HR software: adoption, planned spending, measured payoff, employee use, vendor economics and the HR workforce. Each quote was read on the publisher's own page or filing. Samples differ widely: SHRM surveys HR professionals, Gartner surveys HR leaders and employees separately, Gallup, Pew and ADP Research survey workers, Paychex surveys US small business owners and HR leaders, Mercer and Littler survey US employers, and Eurostat and the BLS publish official statistics. Workday, Paychex and ADP sell HR software, so their research may favor technology; we use it for direction and pair it with independent sources. Vendor revenue figures are company-reported and unaudited for the quarter. We did not find a reliable independent source on HR software satisfaction or switching rates, so those topics are not covered. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
