Email Marketing Statistics 2026

This page collects email marketing figures for 2025 and 2026: how many people use email, open and click benchmarks published by sending platforms, inbox placement, the bulk sender rules set by Google and Microsoft, US CAN-SPAM requirements, consumer channel preferences, ROI estimates and spam volumes. Coverage is global where the publisher measures globally, with EU, UK and US figures labeled as such. A few older figures from Mailchimp and the DMA are included because they are the latest public editions and are marked with their year.

Our reading of the data

Email remains one of the most common things people do online. Eurostat found 82% of EU adults aged 16 to 74 sent or received email in 2025, level with instant messaging and ahead of social networks at 67%. Reading is concentrated in a few places: Litmus attributes 76.56% of tracked opens in September 2026 to Apple, and Validity puts Gmail at 42.9% of global mailbox share.

Benchmarks vary more by platform than by year. MailerLite reports a 43.46% median open rate for 2025, Klaviyo puts a good ecommerce campaign open rate at 31%, and Brevo reports 20.73% once Apple Mail Privacy Protection opens are removed, rising to 33.87% when they are counted. Click rates agree more closely, at 1.69% for Klaviyo campaigns, 2.09% for MailerLite and 2.27% for Brevo. Litmus estimates Apple MPP touches 55% to 60% of opens, which is why clicks and conversions are the safer comparison.

Reaching the inbox is now governed by explicit numbers. Google and Microsoft both apply stricter authentication rules above 5,000 messages a day, and Google withholds delivery help from senders whose user-reported spam rate passes 0.3%. Validity's seed tests show the effect: average global inbox placement rose to 87.2% in 2025, with Gmail at 89.8% and Microsoft still trailing at 77.4%. Spam is the reason these rules exist; Kaspersky measured spam at 44.99% of global email traffic in 2025.

Automation carries a large share of email revenue. Klaviyo attributes nearly 41% of email revenue to flows that are 5.3% of sends, Omnisend reports automations at 2% of sends and 30% of revenue, and Validity finds 2% of volume driving 37% of email sales. On the consumer side, 73.9% of shoppers in Sinch's 2025 survey prefer email for order updates. ROI claims such as $10 to $36 per $1 spent come from marketers' own estimates in the Litmus survey, and 21% of those marketers do not measure ROI at all.

It depends on the platform and whether Apple Mail Privacy Protection opens are counted. MailerLite reports a 43.46% median for 2025, Klaviyo calls 31% good for ecommerce campaigns, and Brevo reports 20.73% without Apple MPP opens and 33.87% with them.
What is the average email click rate?
Most published benchmarks put campaign click rates around 2%. MailerLite reports 2.09% for 2025, Brevo 2.27% and Klaviyo 1.69% for campaigns, while automated flows on Klaviyo reach 5.58%.
What spam complaint rate do Gmail and Yahoo allow?
Google asks all senders to keep the spam rate in Postmaster Tools below 0.3% and recommends staying under 0.1%, since rates above 0.1% already hurt delivery for bulk senders. Senders above 0.3% lose access to delivery mitigation until they stay below it for 7 consecutive days.
Who counts as a bulk sender?
Google and Microsoft both use 5,000 messages a day as the threshold. Above it, Google requires SPF, DKIM, DMARC and one-click unsubscribe, and Microsoft Outlook requires SPF, DKIM and DMARC, routing non-compliant mail to Junk from May 2025.
What is the ROI of email marketing?
There is no measured industry-wide figure. In Litmus's 2025 survey of nearly 500 marketers, 35% reported a return of $10 to $36 per $1 spent and 30% reported $36 to $50, while 21% said they do not measure ROI.
How much email is spam?
Kaspersky measured spam at 44.99% of global email traffic in 2025, peaking at 52.87% in November. Its products also blocked 144,722,674 malicious email attachments that year.

How these figures were chosen

We chose figures from the organizations that produced the data: a statistical office (Eurostat), a regulator (the US Federal Trade Commission), law enforcement (FBI IC3), mailbox providers publishing their own rules (Google, Microsoft), a security vendor reporting its own detections (Kaspersky), and email platforms and research firms reporting their own customer data or surveys (Validity, Litmus, Klaviyo, MailerLite, Brevo, Omnisend, Mailchimp, Sinch and the UK DMA). Platform benchmarks reflect each vendor's customer mix and its own definition of an open, so compare results with the benchmark from your own platform. Mailchimp's benchmark page was last updated in December 2023 and the DMA Consumer Email Tracker 2023 is the latest edition with a public summary; both are labeled with their year. Radicati user forecasts and Ofcom's UK reports could not be retrieved for verification and are not included. Each quote was copied from the source page and rechecked on 2026-11-06. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
