The numbers behind the choice
Customer Retention Statistics 2026
This page covers the retention numbers that matter when choosing software or a subscription model: churn benchmarks by industry and price, net revenue retention and expansion, the experiences that drive customers away, consumer subscription fatigue, and what win-back and pause features achieve. Data spans global subscription networks, US and EU consumer surveys and company filings, mostly from 2025 and 2026, plus a 2001 Bain fundamental that is labeled.

The short answer

Our reading of the data
Churn is lower in B2B than in consumer subscriptions, and price explains much of the gap. Recurly's 2026 network data shows SaaS at a 3.22% median churn rate, and subscriptions priced at $10 to $25 a month churn the most at 4.29%. Involuntary churn from failed payments falls to 0.18% above $250 a month, so billing and payment recovery tools matter most for low-priced products.
Retention drives growth more than acquisition. ChartMogul found median net revenue retention of 82% for B2B SaaS in 2025 against 49% for B2C, and larger SaaS companies got 40% of their 2024 growth from expansion. Ebsta and Pavilion found 52% of new B2B revenue came from existing accounts in 2024, and Freshworks' 104% net dollar retention shows even established vendors grow only slightly from their installed base.
Customers leave quietly after bad service. Qualtrics XM Institute found 34% of consumers cut spending after a bad experience and fewer than 1 in 3 give feedback. Verint's 2026 survey finds 79% of US consumers would switch after a single negative experience, and Zendesk reports 85% of CX leaders expect customers to drop brands that cannot resolve issues on first contact. Automation is acceptable when it works: 69% of US consumers told Verint they would switch to automated service if it fully resolved their issue.
Our reading: build easy exits and easy returns. Deloitte finds 41% of US consumers churn from streaming in six months and 22% come back, Recurly reports that 3 out of 4 subscribers who pause return, ChartMogul finds 45% of win-backs happen within 30 days, and the FTC's $2.5 billion Amazon settlement shows the cost of making cancellation hard. Pick billing and CRM tools that support pause, win-back and payment recovery out of the box.

How these figures were chosen
We used company research and network data (Recurly, ChartMogul, Ebsta and Pavilion, Antenna), consumer and business surveys (Qualtrics XM Institute, Zendesk, Verint, Deloitte, the American Customer Satisfaction Index), official statistics (Eurostat), regulator records (Federal Trade Commission) and company filings (Freshworks). Recurly, ChartMogul, Zendesk and Verint sell retention, billing or service software, so their framing is favorable to those tools. Recurly's churn benchmark page is updated as new data arrives; figures here reflect its July 2026 data. Churn definitions differ by source (customer versus revenue churn, monthly versus annual), so compare figures within a source. The Bain loyalty figure is from 2001 and labeled as such. Each figure was checked against its source on 2026-11-04. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
