AI Customer Service Statistics 2026

This page gathers the figures a buyer needs before paying for an AI agent, chatbot or agent-assist tool: how widely companies deploy them, what resolution and productivity gains look like in real deployments, how customers feel about talking to AI, how vendors price it and what it means for support jobs. Most data comes from US and global surveys published in 2025 and 2026, plus US Bureau of Labor Statistics figures for May 2025 and a few foundational studies from 2022 to 2024 that are labeled with their year.

The short answer

Service teams estimate AI already handles 30% of cases and expect 50% by 2027, according to Salesforce's 2025 State of Service survey, and Five9 found 92% of organizations had implemented or piloted AI in customer service in 2026. Returns lag: Gartner found only 24% of service leaders could show positive financial returns from AI, and only 7% of customers used a company chatbot in their most recent service interaction.

Our reading of the data

Adoption is running ahead of results. Five9 found 92% of organizations had implemented or piloted AI in customer service in 2026, and service professionals surveyed by Salesforce estimate AI already handles 30% of cases. Gartner found service leaders put a median 12% of their 2025 budget into AI, the most of any function it assessed, yet only 24% could show positive financial returns across their AI use cases.

Some deployments do produce hard numbers. An NBER field study of 5,179 support agents found AI assistance raised issues resolved per hour by 14%, and by 34% for novices. Salesforce reports its own help-site agent resolved 70% of 4.3 million inquiries, and Klarna said its customer service and operations costs grew only 10% in the fourth quarter of 2025 despite strong volume growth, which it tied to AI efficiency. These vendor figures use each company's own definitions and are not independently audited.

Customers remain the bottleneck. Gartner found 87% of customers say access to a human agent is essential, only 7% used a company chatbot in their latest service interaction and only 27% would try one again after a bad experience. Verint found 61% of US consumers prefer a human, but 69% would switch to automated service if it fully resolved their issue, and Five9 found 83% still repeat themselves after an AI-to-human handoff. The practical test for buyers is reliable resolution on a narrow set of issues, with a visible human handoff.

Pricing is moving to outcomes. Intercom lists Fin at $0.99 per resolved outcome, which ties cost to results. Gartner predicts agentic AI will resolve 80% of common issues by 2029, while the BLS projects US customer service representative jobs to decline 5% from 2025 to 2035, still with about 289,500 openings a year. Forrester expects CX staffing to rise 20% in 2027 after overzealous cuts, so plan for AI to change support work rather than remove it.

Questions readers ask

How many customer service cases does AI handle today?
Service teams surveyed by Salesforce estimated AI handled 30% of cases in 2025 and expect 50% by 2027. Salesforce's own help-site agent resolved 70% of 4.3 million inquiries, by its own measure. Gartner predicts agentic AI will resolve 80% of common issues by 2029.
Do AI customer service tools pay off?
Often not yet. Gartner found only 24% of service leaders could show positive financial returns across their AI use cases, even though they put a median 12% of their 2025 budget into AI. The best independent evidence, an NBER study, found a 14% productivity gain for support agents.
What resolution rate should I expect from an AI agent?
Vendor-reported rates range from 70% on Salesforce's help site in 2026 to around 85% in an earlier period of the same deployment. Ask any vendor how they define a resolution before you compare these numbers.
Do customers want to talk to AI?
Reluctantly. Gartner found 87% of customers say access to a human is essential and only 27% would try a chatbot again after a bad experience. Verint found 61% of US consumers prefer a human agent, but 69% would switch to automated service if it fully resolved their issue.
How is AI customer service priced?
Increasingly per resolution. Intercom lists Fin at $0.99 per outcome with a 50-outcome monthly minimum, as checked in November 2026, and Salesforce launched a help agent in 2026 that only charges for resolutions.
Will AI replace customer service jobs?
Gradually and partly. The BLS projects US customer service representative employment to decline 5% from 2025 to 2035, but still expects about 289,500 openings a year. Forrester predicts CX staffing will rise 20% in 2027 after overzealous cuts.

How these figures were chosen

We picked figures that help a buyer judge AI customer service software: adoption, measured results, customer acceptance, pricing and workforce effects. Each figure comes from the organization that ran the survey or study, from a company reporting its own deployment or results, or from official statistics, and every quote was checked against the source page. Vendor-reported results from Klarna, Salesforce and Intercom use each company's own definition of resolution and are not independently audited. Five9, Verint, Zendesk, Intercom and Salesforce sell customer service software; we label their surveys and pair them with Gartner, Qualtrics XM Institute, Pew Research Center, the BLS and academic research. Gartner, Salesforce and Zendesk surveys cover global samples; Verint, Pew, the BLS and the CFPB cover the United States. The CFPB's 2022 figure, the NBER study and Klarna's 2024 launch figures are older and labeled with their year. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker.
