AI Writing Statistics 2026

This page collects figures on AI writing tools: who uses them, what they write with them, how much time they save, how satisfied users are, what the tools cost and how reliable the output is. Most figures cover the United States, with comparison points from the UK, the EU and a six-country Reuters Institute survey. Most data come from 2025 and 2026 surveys and usage studies; a few controlled experiments from 2023 are included and labeled with their year.

Our reading of the data

AI writing tools are now widely used. Pew Research Center found 44% of U.S. adults used ChatGPT in early 2026, up from 34% a year earlier, and Gallup puts workplace use at 52% of U.S. employees at least a few times a year. The Reuters Institute found weekly use of generative AI nearly doubled in one year across six countries, to 34%. Business use is lower in Europe: Eurostat found 8.8% of EU enterprises used AI to generate written or spoken language in 2025.

Writing is a core work use. An NBER working paper puts writing at 40% of work-related ChatGPT messages in June 2025, and 52% for users in management and business jobs, although writing's share of all ChatGPT messages fell from 36% to 24% over the year to July 2025. Pew's worker survey found editing (52%) and drafting (47%) were among the most common work uses of chatbots, after research.

The productivity evidence is real but varies by method. A 2023 MIT experiment cut writing time by 40% and raised quality by 18%, and the 2023 Harvard Business School study of BCG consultants found 25.1% faster work on tasks inside AI's abilities, but 19% fewer correct answers on a task outside them. Survey-based time savings are smaller, about 5.4% of work hours in research by St. Louis Fed economists, while Gallup found 65% of employees in AI-using organizations report a positive effect on productivity.

Satisfaction and trust lag adoption. ACSI scores AI platforms at 73 out of 100, though premium subscribers score ChatGPT at 80 and Gemini at 82. A BBC and EBU study found 45% of AI answers about news had at least one significant issue, and a 2023 Stanford study showed AI detectors flagged 61.22% of essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated.

Questions readers ask

How many people use AI writing tools?
About half of U.S. adults use AI chatbots and 44% use ChatGPT, according to Pew Research Center's 2026 survey. Gallup found 52% of U.S. employees use AI at work at least a few times a year.
What do people use AI writing tools for at work?
Writing is the most common work use of ChatGPT, at 40% of work-related messages in June 2025 according to an NBER working paper. Pew found 52% of workers who use chatbots for work have used them to edit written content and 47% to draft it.
Does AI writing actually save time?
In a 2023 MIT experiment, ChatGPT cut writing time by 40% and raised quality by 18%. Across all work, research by St. Louis Fed economists puts average savings at 5.4% of work hours, about 2.2 hours a week.
Which AI writing assistant has the most satisfied users?
ACSI's 2026 study ranks Google Gemini first at 76, then Microsoft Copilot at 74 and ChatGPT and Claude at 73. Premium subscribers score higher, with ChatGPT at 80 and Gemini at 82.
Are AI detectors reliable?
Not reliable enough to act on alone. A 2023 Stanford study found seven detectors labeled 61.22% of essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated. Content studies that use detectors, such as those by Ahrefs and Originality.ai, should be read as estimates.

How these figures were chosen

We chose figures on adoption, use cases, measured productivity, satisfaction, price changes and output reliability. Sources are the organizations that ran the survey, experiment or analysis, and every quote was checked against the source page on 2026-11-04. Samples differ: Pew and Gallup survey U.S. adults and workers, the Reuters Institute covers six countries, HEPI covers UK undergraduates, and OpenAI and Anthropic report on their own users. Content studies by Ahrefs and Originality.ai rely on AI detectors, which have known error rates, so treat those shares as estimates. The 2023 experiments from MIT, Harvard Business School and Stanford are included because no newer studies of the same design have replaced them, and each is labeled with its year. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
