Our reading of the data

Online retail is still growing faster than retail as a whole. The Census Bureau estimates US e-commerce at $340.2 billion in the second quarter of 2026, or 17.1% of seasonally adjusted retail sales, up from 16.4% for full-year 2025. Year-over-year growth of 12.2% was almost double the 6.7% for all retail. Holiday trackers agree on the direction: Adobe counted $257.8 billion of US online spending in November and December 2025, and Mastercard SpendingPulse measured online growth of 7.4% against 2.9% in stores.

The share of retail made online depends heavily on the country and the definition. The ONS puts Great Britain at 28.8% in September 2026 and China's National Bureau of Statistics puts online sales of physical goods at 26.1% of retail in 2025. Statistics Canada reports 7.6%, partly because its retail measure excludes most services. In Australia, the ABS measured 12.7% in June 2025 while Australia Post's broader estimate was 24% for the year, a reminder that scope matters more than headline numbers.

On the buyer side, Eurostat found 78% of EU internet users bought online in 2025, up from 62% in 2015, and Adobe found smartphones handled 56.4% of US online holiday transactions. Trust remains a weak point: Pew Research Center found 36% of US adults had lost money on an online order that never arrived or was counterfeit. Cross-border trade is the hardest part to measure, and UNCTAD's latest estimate of $2.5 trillion in international e-commerce sales dates from 2021.

Selling online is less common than buying online. Eurostat found only 23.59% of EU enterprises with 10 or more staff made e-sales in 2024, rising to 48.48% of large firms. Large platforms capture a big share of the activity: Shopify merchants processed $119 billion of GMV in the third quarter of 2026, eBay $23.2 billion and Shopee $38.3 billion in the second quarter. Platform GMV is not revenue and is defined differently by each company, so it should not be summed or compared directly with official retail statistics.

How these figures were chosen

We chose figures that describe online retail size, online buying behavior, and online selling by businesses and platforms, and checked each quote against the publisher's page or filing. Official statistics (U.S. Census Bureau, Eurostat, ONS, Statistics Canada, Australian Bureau of Statistics, National Bureau of Statistics of China, UNCTAD) are the base; survey and transaction-panel data from Pew Research Center, Adobe, Salesforce and Mastercard add detail; platform figures come from SEC filings. Definitions differ: Census and Statistics Canada cover retail trade only, the ONS covers Great Britain, Eurostat counts enterprises with 10 or more staff and individuals aged 16 to 74, and holiday trackers measure different baskets and dates. UNCTAD's global estimates describe 2021 and 2022 and are the newest available. The ABS discontinued its monthly retail series after June 2025. Census links point to dated quarterly releases rather than the page that is replaced each quarter. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker.
