Our reading of the data
The app market has moved from growth in installs to growth in spending. Sensor Tower counts nearly 150 billion downloads in 2025, up 0.8%, while in-app purchase revenue rose 10.6% to $167 billion. In the second quarter of 2026 revenue rose another 5.3% to $43.6 billion with flat downloads. Time spent tells the same story: 5.3 trillion hours in 2025, or about 3.6 hours per user per day.
Generative AI changed what people pay for. Non-game apps out-earned games across a full year for the first time in 2025, and Sensor Tower attributes much of that to AI assistants, whose downloads doubled to 3.8 billion while their revenue passed $5 billion. RevenueCat sees the other side: AI apps earn 41% more per paying customer but lose subscribers 30% faster.
Apple's ecosystem study shows how much commerce runs through apps beyond app purchases. Of $1.4 trillion in billings and sales in 2025, $1.1 trillion was physical goods and services and $151 billion was in-app advertising, while digital goods came to $149 billion. That $149 billion is the figure to compare with Sensor Tower's store spending estimates.
For developers, the subscription data from RevenueCat and Adapty points to a market where a few apps take most of the money. Adapty finds the top 10% of apps capture 94.5% of subscription revenue and the median app earns $492 a month, while RevenueCat counts about 14,700 new subscription apps launching every month. Hard paywalls, longer trials and fixing billing failures are the levers with the clearest effect in both datasets.

How these figures were chosen
We chose figures from the companies and institutions that collected the data: app intelligence firm Sensor Tower, attribution providers Adjust and AppsFlyer, subscription platforms RevenueCat and Adapty, the store operators Apple and Google, Pew Research Center, the ITU, GSMA, Deloitte and Qustodio. Sensor Tower's download and revenue figures are modeled estimates for the App Store and Google Play and exclude third-party Android stores in China. Adjust, AppsFlyer, RevenueCat, Adapty and Qustodio report on apps or families that use their products, so their samples are not representative of every app or user. Apple's ecosystem figures come from a study Apple commissioned and include physical goods and advertising. Survey figures from Pew and Deloitte describe US and UK adults or teens. Every quote was refetched from its source page before publication. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
