Data Breach Statistics 2026
This page collects current figures on how many data breaches are reported, what they cost, how attackers get in, how ransomware and phishing losses are changing, and how long breaches take to detect. Data cover the US, the UK, the EU, Canada and Australia plus global incident response datasets. Nearly every figure describes 2025 or 2026, and each one links to the agency survey, regulator, breach tracker or incident report that produced it.

The short answer
The average data breach cost $4.99 million worldwide in IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report, a record high and 12% more than a year earlier. Verizon's 2026 DBIR found vulnerability exploitation is now the top way into a breach at 31%, and ransomware appeared in 48% of breaches. In the US, the Identity Theft Resource Center counted a record 3,322 data compromises in 2025, and the FBI logged nearly $21 billion in reported internet crime losses.

Our reading of the data
Breach counts keep setting records even when fewer people are notified. The Identity Theft Resource Center tracked 3,322 US data compromises in 2025, the most in its 20 years of tracking, but victim notices fell 79% to about 279 million because 2025 had no mega-breach. That changed in 2026: 471.2 million notices went out in the first half alone. Australia's OAIC also logged a record 1,205 breach notifications in 2025, and the UK's NCSC handled 204 nationally significant incidents in its 2025 review year, up from 89.
Costs depend heavily on who is counting. IBM and the Ponemon Institute put the global average breach at $4.99 million in 2026, while breaches that used AI averaged $6 million. Survey data from smaller firms tells a different story: the UK Cyber Security Breaches Survey found most businesses reported little or no direct cost, with the top 5% facing £4,000 or more. The FBI's IC3, which counts losses reported by victims rather than breach costs, recorded nearly $21 billion in 2025.
Attackers are shifting from stolen passwords to unpatched software. Verizon found exploitation of vulnerabilities was the entry point in 31% of breaches, ahead of credential abuse at 13%, and only 26% of known exploited vulnerabilities were fully fixed. Mandiant reached a similar result, with exploits behind 32% of intrusions. Phishing still dominates in Europe, where ENISA attributes about 60% of intrusions to it, and voice and text lures now get more clicks than email in Verizon's simulations.
Ransomware is more common but pays less often. Verizon saw ransomware in 48% of breaches while 69% of victims did not pay, and Chainalysis estimates only 28% of victims paid in 2025 as on-chain payments fell 8% to $820 million. The typical payment that does happen is larger: Coveware's median rose to $400,000 in Q3 2026. Our reading: the most useful spending goes to patching speed, phishing-resistant sign-in and tested backups, because those cut the three most common routes in.

Questions readers ask
- How much does a data breach cost on average?
- IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report put the global average at $4.99 million, a record and 12% more than the year before. Breaches that used AI averaged $6 million. Smaller firms usually see far lower direct costs: most UK businesses reported little or none, though the top 5% faced £4,000 or more.
- How many data breaches happen each year?
- The Identity Theft Resource Center counted a record 3,322 publicly reported US data compromises in 2025 and 1,803 in the first half of 2026. Verizon's 2026 report analyzed more than 22,000 confirmed breaches worldwide, and Australia's OAIC received a record 1,205 notifications in 2025.
- What is the most common cause of data breaches?
- In Verizon's 2026 report, exploiting software vulnerabilities became the most common way in at 31% of breaches, ahead of stolen credentials at 13%, and Mandiant found exploits behind 32% of intrusions. In Europe, ENISA attributes about 60% of intrusions to phishing. A human element was present in 62% of breaches in Verizon's data.
- How long does it take to detect a data breach?
- Mandiant's global median dwell time was 14 days in its 2025 investigations, up from 11 days, and espionage intrusions went unnoticed for a median of 122 days. Attackers move fast once inside: CrowdStrike measured average breakout time at 29 minutes.
- Do companies pay ransomware demands?
- Fewer do each year. 69% of ransomware victims in Verizon's 2026 dataset did not pay, Chainalysis estimates only 28% paid in 2025, and 84% of Canadian businesses hit by ransomware in 2025 did not pay. Those who pay are paying more at the median: $400,000 in Coveware's Q3 2026 cases.
How these figures were chosen
We chose figures from the organizations that collected the data: government surveys (UK DSIT, Statistics Canada), regulators and law enforcement (FBI, OAIC, NCSC, ENISA), the Identity Theft Resource Center's breach tracker, and incident and breach studies from Verizon, IBM with the Ponemon Institute, Mandiant, CrowdStrike, Chainalysis and Coveware. These sources measure different things. Breach trackers count public notices, government surveys sample all businesses including many small ones, IBM studies breached organizations that are mostly large, and incident response firms see the cases they handle, which skews toward serious events. Cost figures are in the currency each source used: US dollars unless marked as pounds or Canadian dollars. Years refer to the period the data describes, which is often the year before publication. We could not include HHS breach portal data because the portal does not load in a form our source checker can verify. Every quote was copied from the publisher's page and re-checked by our source checker. Read the methodology.
