WooCommerce is the open source option for merchants who want to own their store outright. It is a free plugin for WordPress, so you install it on any host, keep full access to the code and database, and pay no platform fee or revenue share. You pick the payment processor; WooPayments runs about 2.50% to 2.90% + 30¢ per transaction by WooCommerce's own comparison. The flexibility is large: the extension marketplace covers subscriptions, bookings, shipping carriers and marketing, and any WordPress theme can be used. The trade-off is work. You choose hosting, which WooCommerce estimates at $25 to $350 per month for most stores, and you handle updates, backups and security yourself or pay someone to do it. Extensions cost $29 to $299 per year each. For a merchant with WordPress skills or a developer on call, WooCommerce offers the most control for the money.
