9 Best Accounting Software for Freelancers of 2026
By the KeenVerdict research desk · Updated November 7, 2026 · Next review December 22, 2026 · 9 products scored

Our verdict
QuickBooks Solopreneur fits the job best: it is built for single-owner businesses, sorts expenses for Schedule C, tracks mileage on the phone and starts free, with Lite at $20 per month removing the invoice and receipt caps. FreshBooks is the stronger invoicing tool and labels tax-time reports on every plan, but Lite stops at 5 billable clients. Zoho Books and Wave give you real double-entry books for $0. Xero is the pick if you expect to hire, Keeper if you want the tax return filed for you, Bonsai if contracts and proposals come before the invoice, Lili if you want banking and books in one app, and Kashoo if you want one flat plan with unlimited users.
The short answer
QuickBooks Solopreneur is the best accounting software for freelancers in 2026, with a free plan and Lite at $20 per month for unlimited invoices, receipts and mileage; FreshBooks suits freelancers who bill a handful of clients and want reminders and tax-time reports from $23 per month. Zoho Books and Wave are the free options, with Zoho Books free while yearly revenue stays under $50K.
This list is for freelancers, contractors and one-person businesses that need to send invoices, sort business expenses and hand clean numbers to a tax preparer each spring. It covers small business accounting apps, tools built for a business of one, a banking app with bookkeeping built in and a bookkeeping service that also files your return. We compared documented features and published prices; we did not run hands-on tests. Scores weigh features at 40 percent, ease of use at 30 and value at 30. Prices are in USD as shown on each vendor's page on the check date, at list price rather than introductory discounts.

Free plan; Lite $20 per month with unlimited invoices, receipts and mileage
Quoted from the QuickBooks Solopreneur pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Lite Automate solopreneur finances and save on taxes with expert help. $20 $10 / mo
QuickBooks Solopreneur is Intuit's answer to the one-person business, and Intuit says plainly that it trades team and inventory features for automated transaction sorting and tax readiness. That trade suits most freelancers. The software sorts expenses to help with Schedule C deductions, the mobile app logs miles with the phone's GPS and captures receipts, and invoices can be paid by card, ACH, Apple Pay, PayPal or Venmo. The Free plan is real but tight: 2 invoices, 2 receipt uploads and 5 mileage trips a month, plus the profit and loss and balance sheet reports. Lite at $20 per month at list price lifts those caps, adds automated sales tax, bill pay and 3 contractors, and connects to Expert Assisted Tax through TurboTax, which you pay for only when you file. The catch is that accountant access starts on Simple Start at $38, so freelancers who work with a bookkeeper should price that tier instead.
What works
- +Free plan for getting started with no credit card
- +Lite removes the invoice, receipt and mileage caps
- +Expert Assisted Tax through TurboTax on Lite, paid when you file
What does not
- −Free plan allows only 2 invoices and 2 receipts a month
- −No accountant access below Simple Start
- −Built for one user, so a growing team needs another plan

Lite $23 per month for 5 billable clients; Plus $43; Premium $70
Quoted from the FreshBooks pricing page on November 7, 2026:
$ 23 .00 USD/mo Buy Now Buy Now & Save or Try It Free Send invoices to 5 clients
FreshBooks starts from the invoice and builds the books around it, which is how many freelancers think about money. Every plan lists real-time expense tracking, estimates and tax-time reports, and clients can pay by debit or credit card, ACH bank transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay or buy now, pay later. The limit that shapes the choice is clients, not invoices: Lite at $23 per month covers 5 billable clients, Plus at $43 covers 50 and Premium at $70 removes the cap. Plus is also where receipt scanning, proposals, client retainers, financial and accounting reports and accountant access appear, so a freelancer who wants their accountant to log in is really looking at $43. The pricing page shows a deep discount for the first 4 months, but we quote the regular price. For a designer or consultant with a few steady retainer clients, Lite is enough and the invoicing is among the most complete on this list.
What works
- +Tax-time reports are included even on Lite
- +Clients get many ways to pay
- +30-day free trial and a 30-day money back guarantee
What does not
- −Lite is limited to 5 billable clients
- −Receipt scanning and accountant access start on Plus at $43
- −No free plan

Free plan under $50K yearly revenue; Standard $15 per org per month billed annually ($20 monthly)
Quoted from the Zoho Books pricing page on November 7, 2026:
STANDARD Efficiently organize your transactions, accounts, reports, and books $ 20 $ 15 Price/Org/Month
Zoho Books gives freelancers more for $0 than any other tool here. The free plan, aimed at solopreneurs and micro businesses, includes invoices, quotes, expenses, recurring invoices, receipt and document autoscans, mileage tracking, online payments, automated payment reminders, a customer portal, bank reconciliation, 1099 contractor tracking and more than 50 reports, with one user plus one accountant. Zoho's FAQ says the plan stays free as long as revenue for the financial year stays under $50K. Paying for Standard at $15 per month billed annually, or $20 monthly, adds connected bank feeds, sales and use tax tracking, 1099 e-filing, recurring expenses and custom reports. The trade-off is depth: Zoho Books is a general small business ledger with purchase orders, inventory and approvals waiting on higher tiers, so there is more interface than a freelancer strictly needs. If you can live without automatic bank feeds, the free plan covers a full tax year of bookkeeping.
What works
- +Free plan includes bank reconciliation and payment reminders
- +Accountant seat included on the free plan
- +Standard adds bank feeds and sales tax for $15 a month billed annually
What does not
- −Free plan ends once yearly revenue passes $50K
- −Bank feeds start on Standard
- −More settings to learn than tools built only for freelancers
- Starting price
- $15 per org per month billed annually (Standard)
- Free plan
- Yes, while yearly revenue is under $50K
- Users
- 1 user plus 1 accountant on Free, 3 on Standard
- Reports
- P&L, balance sheet and 50+ reports

Starter free; Pro $19 per month or $190 per year
Quoted from the Wave pricing page on November 7, 2026:
It’s Pro time. $19 USD/month Billed monthly
Wave is the easiest free option for freelancers who mainly want to bill and keep a record. Starter costs nothing and lists unlimited estimates, invoices, bills and bookkeeping records, a cash flow dashboard and a mobile app for invoicing on the go. Card payments on Starter cost 2.9% plus $0.60, which adds up on small invoices. Pro at $19 per month, or $190 billed yearly, removes the fixed fee, imports and auto-categorizes bank transactions, captures unlimited receipts and automates late payment reminders. Those are the features that save time at tax time, so many freelancers will end up on Pro. Wave also sells Wave Advisors, a done-for-you bookkeeping service that prepares monthly statements, starting at $149 per month. Compared with Zoho Books, Wave is simpler but has fewer reports and no mileage tracking listed on its pricing page, so drivers should look elsewhere.
What works
- +Starter is free with unlimited invoices
- +Pro drops the fixed card fee to $0 per transaction
- +Bookkeeping help is available from Wave Advisors
What does not
- −Starter has no automatic bank import
- −Starter card payments cost 2.9% plus $0.60
- −Fewer reports and integrations than Zoho Books or Xero
- Starting price
- $19 per month (Pro)
- Free plan
- Yes, Starter with unlimited invoices
- Card fee

Bookkeeping Only $20 per month; Standard with tax filing $199 per year; Premium $399 per year
Quoted from the Keeper pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Bookkeeping Only Track expenses as you go. $20 /mo Billed monthly.
Keeper is not a general ledger; it is a deduction finder with a tax return attached, which is exactly what some freelancers want. It connects unlimited bank and card accounts, tracks expenses automatically, uses AI to find and categorize write-offs, scans receipts, applies rules to recurring merchants and splits mixed orders, such as an Amazon basket, into business and personal items. Bookkeeping Only costs $20 per month without filing. The Standard yearly plan at $199 adds a federal return and up to 2 state returns reviewed and signed by a tax pro, and Keeper notes that this costs less than 12 months of Bookkeeping Only. Premium at $399 adds quarterly tax payments, audit protection and consultations with a tax pro. What it lacks matters too: there is no invoicing, mileage tracking is listed as coming soon and you do not get a balance sheet. Pair it with a free invoicing tool if you bill clients directly.
What works
- +Tax filing is included on yearly plans
- +Splits mixed orders into business and personal items
- +14-day free trial on every plan
What does not
- −No invoicing, so you need a separate billing tool
- −Mileage tracking is listed as coming soon
- −Not a double-entry ledger with a balance sheet
- Starting price
- $20 per month (Bookkeeping Only)
- With tax filing
- $199 per year (Standard)

Early $27 per month for 20 invoices; Growing $59; Established $97
Quoted from the Xero pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Then $27 per month An easy financial foundation - track cash flow with the essentials.
Xero is a full small business ledger, and its Early plan already includes things freelancers often pay extra for: bank reconciliation, Smart Document Capture, W-9 and 1099 management, sales tax, real-time reports, a 30-day cash flow forecast and free domestic ACH bill payments. Xero also lists free expert setup help. The limit is volume: Early at $27 per month allows quotes plus 20 invoices and 5 bills, which works for a freelancer with a few monthly clients but not for someone billing dozens of small jobs. Growing at $59 removes the invoice cap and adds auto-reconcile and bill automation, and Established at $97 brings project time tracking, mileage claims and multiple currencies. Many accountants already work in Xero, so it makes the most sense for a freelancer who plans to hire or form a company and wants to avoid switching later. For a pure solo business it costs more than it needs to.
What works
- +1099 management and sales tax included on Early
- +Free expert setup help
- +Room to grow into payroll, projects and multi-currency
What does not
- −Early caps you at 20 invoices and 5 bills
- −Highest entry price among the general ledgers here
- −Project time tracking and mileage claims start on Established at $97
- Starting price
- $27 per month (Early)
- Invoices on Early
- 20, plus quotes
- Bills on Early

Price
Basic $9 per user per month billed annually (no invoicing); Essentials $19 billed annually or $25 monthly
Quoted from the Bonsai pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Essentials $19 /user/month The essentials for an end-to-end client and project management
Bonsai earns a place here because many freelancers lose more time between the pitch and the invoice than in the books. Essentials, at $19 per user per month billed annually or $25 monthly, combines proposals, contracts, invoices and payments, forms and questionnaires, scheduling, a client portal and expense and income tracking, on top of the time tracking, task management and unlimited projects in Basic. That makes it a good fit for designers, developers and marketers who bill hourly or by project. It is not a ledger, though. Bonsai tracks income and expenses but does not list bank reconciliation or a balance sheet, so freelancers who want full books usually pair it with accounting software, and the QuickBooks and Xero integrations sit on Premium at $29. Basic at $9 does not include invoicing, so treat Essentials as the real starting point. The free trial runs 7 days.
What works
- +Proposal to contract to invoice in one workflow
- +Built-in time tracking for hourly billing
- +Unlimited clients on every plan
What does not
- −Not double-entry accounting, so tax reports are basic
- −Invoicing starts on Essentials, not Basic
- −Syncing to QuickBooks or Xero needs Premium at $29
- Starting price with invoicing
- $19 per user per month billed annually (Essentials)

Lili Core free (banking); Pro $15 per month; Smart with accounting and invoicing $35; Premium $55
Quoted from the Lili pricing page on November 7, 2026:
Lili Pro $15 /mo $9 /mo for 3 months
Lili is a financial technology company whose business checking is provided by Sunrise Banks, and it builds bookkeeping on top of the account rather than syncing to one. Lili Core is free and covers banking only. Pro at $15 per month adds expense and tax management: transactions sorted into tax categories, receipts and notes on expenses, quarterly and annual expense reports and automatic set-asides for tax payments. The accounting software that matters for this list starts on Smart at $35 per month, with AI transaction categorization, profit and loss and cash flow statements, unlimited invoices with reminders, bill scanning and sync of outside bank and card accounts. Paid plans come with a 30-day free trial. The appeal is that one app holds the money and the records, so categorization happens where the spending happens. The downside is that you have to move your business banking to Lili, and Smart costs more than Zoho Books Standard or Wave Pro.
What works
- +Bank account and books share the same transactions
- +Tax savings allocation on paid plans
- +30-day free trial on paid plans
What does not
- −Accounting and invoicing need Smart at $35 per month
- −You have to bank with Lili to use it
- −No accountant access listed on the plans page

- Accounting and invoicing

One plan at $30 per month
Quoted from the Kashoo pricing page on November 7, 2026:
$30.00/Mo Start my free trial
Kashoo keeps the decision simple: there is one plan, it costs $30 per month and everything is included. That plan lists unlimited invoices, online payments, expense and bill tracking, sales tax tracking, bank feed sync, project and item tracking, multi-currency, unlimited attachments, unlimited users, two-factor authentication and a double-entry ledger, plus integrations with Square and with PaymentEvolution for payroll. For a freelancer, the double-entry ledger means an accountant gets proper books, and unlimited users means you can add your bookkeeper at no cost. The pricing page shows a 14-day free trial with no credit card and a limited-time discount on the first 6 months. The weak spot is value for a solo business: $30 per month is more than Wave Pro or Zoho Books Standard, and the plan page does not mention mileage tracking or tax-specific reports. Kashoo also sells an add-on that auto-posts and categorizes transactions.
What works
- +One plan with everything included
- +Unlimited users at no extra cost
- +14-day free trial with no credit card

Before you choose
Start from what your tax preparer needs
Most freelancers file a Schedule C, so the software has to sort expenses into deductible categories and produce a profit and loss report. QuickBooks Solopreneur says it sorts expenses for Schedule C, FreshBooks lists tax-time reports on every plan and Lili Pro generates quarterly and annual expense reports. Keeper goes one step further and files the return on its yearly plans.
Check the free plan limits
Free plans differ more than their price suggests. QuickBooks Free allows 2 invoices, 2 receipts and 5 mileage trips a month. Zoho Books Free stays free while yearly revenue is under $50K. Wave Starter has unlimited invoices but no bank import and charges 2.9% plus $0.60 per card payment.
Count clients and invoices before you pay
Entry plans are often capped by volume. FreshBooks Lite covers 5 billable clients and Plus covers 50. Xero Early allows 20 invoices and 5 bills. Kashoo, Wave and QuickBooks Lite list unlimited invoices. If you bill many small clients, these caps matter more than the monthly price.
Decide if you want mileage and receipts on the phone
Drivers and field freelancers should look for automatic mileage tracking. QuickBooks Solopreneur uses the phone's GPS to log trips, Zoho Books lists mileage tracking on its free plan and FreshBooks and Wave capture receipts. Keeper lists mileage tracking as coming soon.
Look past the introductory price
Many vendors show a discount for the first months: QuickBooks, Wave, Xero and Lili all cut the first 3 months, and FreshBooks shows 80% off for 4 months. Budget for the regular price, which is what we quote here, and check whether the yearly plan saves money.
Questions readers ask
- What is the best accounting software for freelancers in 2026?
- QuickBooks Solopreneur is our top pick. It is built for single-owner businesses, sorts expenses for Schedule C, tracks mileage with the phone's GPS and has a free plan. Lite costs $20 per month at list price and removes the invoice, receipt and mileage limits.
- What is the best free accounting software for freelancers?
- Zoho Books and Wave. Zoho Books Free includes invoices, mileage tracking, bank reconciliation, payment reminders and more than 50 reports while yearly revenue stays under $50K. Wave Starter has unlimited invoices and bookkeeping records but no bank import, and card payments cost 2.9% plus $0.60.
- Which accounting software helps most at tax time?
- QuickBooks Solopreneur sorts expenses for Schedule C and links to Expert Assisted Tax through TurboTax on Lite. FreshBooks includes tax-time reports on every plan. Keeper goes furthest: its $199 yearly Standard plan includes a federal return and up to 2 state returns signed by a tax pro.
- Do freelancers need double-entry accounting?
- Not always. If you file a Schedule C and your income comes from a few clients, income and expense tracking with a profit and loss report is often enough.
